Nokia didn’t release any official Chat client for Nokia N8 or Symbian^3 devices yet so far. However there is a variety of third party apps which provide IM services but we are talking about the official one from Nokia as Nokia has been providing an official IM Chat client for various earlier devices since long time.
UPDATE 1 – March 18, 2011 02:00 PM
[Warning] : There has been found a conflict issue of this Chat client on Nokia N8 with the built-in email client in the device. The built-in email client was found dead later than installing this Chat client. After installing Chat client on your Nokia N8, you might face email client not receiving emails and not even creating any new mailboxes.
[Fix for early Adopters] If any one of you have already installed it on Nokia N8 and want to get the working Email Client back more than enjoying this Chat client. Just go to Application Manager in your device then uninstall both “Chat” Widget and “Chat Client” App. You will need to restart the device manually. After removing Chat client and restarting the device, the Email client will be back on job.

Official release of IM for Nokia has been released for Symbian^3 devices including Nokia N8, E7, C7, C6-01 and is available on Ovi Store
Hope that Nokia will release a version for Symbian^3 devices as well soon but until then, if you have been waiting for Nokia Chat client on your N8, the good news for you is that the very new version of Nokia Chat client for S60 v5 is almost ready and fully working in Nokia N8. find the screen shots below. These all were taken from Nokia N8. It should also work in other Symbian^3 devices as well e.g. Nokia E7 and Nokia C7. The only missing thing is the Widget. Widget for the client gets installed successfully on first run of the client and the phone prompts to restart. But on Nokia N8 the Widget didn’t work. So forget about widget and use the client that works well and notifies you about all the events when the app is running in background.

To download Nokia Chat client (IM for Nokia) for above devices go to Ovi Store or visit Nokia Messaging for IM website on your device.
Download the sis file and install manually in your Nokia N8. There should not be any error. Incompatibility warning will be shown, you can ignore that and proceed with installation. On first run of the client the Widget will be installed and device will restart. However even after successful installation the widget will not appear in catalog. Just enjoy the client itself.
This should work fine on other Symbian^3 devices including Nokia E7 and Nokia C7
