Parking – A new Qt App in Ovi Store

Ovi Store is getting loaded everyday with new cool apps. Is it due to the gracefulness of Qt framework or something else?

Whatever – but this specific post is to tell about new app named “Parking”. It’s free on Ovi Store.

UPDATE: May 9, 2011

“Parking 2” (the latest version) is available on Ovi Store with some changes. The most prominent is the Maps. Now the maps used in “Parking 2” are OVI Maps. – Links after the break –

“Parking” original/earlier version was serving with the OpenStreetMaps, which I wasn’t satisfied and wished if it was facilitated with Google Maps instead as they were having huge detail in Pakistan region already. Any how now that the newer version has loaded the OVI Maps in it so we can assume that the OVI-Maps might also be near to get Pakistan’s detail maps soon as NAVTEQ base maps have already been updated with Pakistan’s detail maps. See the post about NAVTEQ Pakistan Maps.

If you are in Pakistan and willing to download this App. My recommendation is to download the earlier version and leave the “Parking 2” for now as OVI-Maps currently has nothing for you to locate on maps but in earlier version 1 of “Parking” is having OpenStreetMaps which do have some detailed Pakistan Maps to be helpful for you. However you can test both.

The “Parking” app is a full fledged parking utility application to help you park and locate your car in a big rush of other cars. It lets you add notes, details and color to remember the place if any way you can’t get enough GPS signal strength.

Park your car with your “Parking” using GPS, or with writing a note or recording a voice note to remember.

You can locate your car with the help of 5 different ways, including map to mark you and your vehicle, radar, camera with augmented reality, your written note or your voice note.

One more feature is that you can even set a timer and alarm to alert you to return back to your vehicle if you are dealing with a timed parking.

Setting a timer is like a fun to rotate it clock wise to increase the interval or counter clock wise to decrease the interval. You can in fact tap on the button center to increase it.

Once the timer’s set you can leave the app running in back ground and can back to home screen or can do your other work. Call or receive calls. You will be notified with the alarm. The good thing is that the app uses native alarm feature with help of adding a “to-do” note in calendar.

Following is what Andy, the developer of “Parking” app, has given the status updates about the app.

  1. The app is in Ovi Store for about two months and have over 10K downloads by now. That’s nice. ))
  2. It seems that View on camera feature does not work well. Sometimes Camera API fails to init a viewfinder. This is due to QT framework and Symbian OS interoperability issues.
  3. The new version – Parking 2 just finished and uploaded to Ovi Store QA portal. What’s new:
    • Ovi Maps support was added. Now you can choose a map provider: Ovi or Open Street.
    • View on camera fixes and workarounds. It still might fail sometime, but not as often as before.
    • New QT 4.7.2 and Mobility 1.1.1 used. Due to this you cannot use Parking 2 until the mentioned frameworks are released by Nokia (expected end of March).
