Nokia to bring Linux-based OS “Meltemi” for its feature phones?

As MeeGo’s development future has already been decided to limit within the Nokia N9 and another OS named Tizen is about to evolve from MeeGo. Nokia is about to bring another linux-based OS “Meltemi” to its low-end feature phones.

We have already heard about the major hardware changes which Nokia is about to bring in low-end S40 devices. I never understood the strategy to deploy high-end hardware under Java-based S40 phones. But this “Meltemi” is what made me think that it’s what Nokia might have planned to bring with high-end hardware to its feature-phones. Well that’s just my own assumption.

Whatever but this news will just be one of the other rumours until any official statement comes from Nokia. But this rumour or news has come from The Wall Street Journal

Nokia Corp., having abandoned its ambition to develop a high-end operating system, is shifting its programming efforts toward creating software for its low-end phones, according to people familiar with the matter.

The project is a Linux-based operating system code-named Meltemi, the Greek word for dry summer winds that blow across the Aegean Sea from the north. It is being led by Mary McDowell, the handset maker’s executive vice president in charge of mobile phones, these people say.

A spokesman for Nokia, Doug Dawson, declined to comment on the Finland-based company’s future products or technologies.
