I wonder if anyone there knowing MeeGo/Harmattan based Nokia N9 and also knowing recently launched Lumia 800 powered by Windows Phone 7.5, isn’t familiar with the similarities between both. Other than a few soft buttons/keys and a hardware camera key there is hardly a difference of a bit of size between both. But there sure is a big difference packed inside them. Both of the devices are running on completely different track, Lumia 800 with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5 OS while N9 is the only standing device from Nokia running MeeGo/Harmattan OS.

Leaving the OS apart there is also a difference in the hardware, a little bit though. Before going on with comparing them both we should keep in mind that N9 has already gained a lot of appreciations globally being a perfect device from all aspects.

So how do these two devices differ and matches at the same time?

  • Well Lumia 800 somewhere matches the Nokia N9 and somewhere they both differ. Starting with processor speed and type the newly launched Windows Phone, Lumia 800 with Snapdragon single processor at clock speed of 1.4GHz, leads the MeeGo packed N9 that featured only 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 single processor –  Lumia 800 wins
  • But when talking about RAM, the Lumia 800 is half level down at 512MB as N9 is powered by 1GB of RAM. If it will be alone RAM to count then of course N9 wins. But considering the combination of RAM with the processor speed I believe 1GHz with 1GB RAM is more balanced than Lumia’s 1.4GHz with only 512MB RAM – N9 wins
  • The display factor also differs with N9 having 3.9″ display screen while Lumia 800 is having 3.7″. N9 having Gorilla Glass protection while Lumia doesn’t mention it any where so we consider it there is no Gorilla Glass on Lumia 800. Both supporting with AMOLED display but Lumia having Clear Black technology while N9 doesn’t. Though N9 has a laminated deep black display which also performs better than regular AMOLED and makes the screen actually black (not as much as CBD) and UI really feels like floating onto the surface of screen (as mentioned by Marko in N9 launch keynote). So overall with this respect, both should be equally preferred – You can decide a winner according to your preferences. For me it’s N9 “the winner” preferring 3.9″ screen with Gorilla Glass and sharp display with deep black.
  • The matching factor is 8 mega pixels of Camera in both devices with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash. specs wise both matches but can’t say any thing without matching the picture results of both cameras – draw

UPDATE: Price factor has been added.

Actually I left the price factor intentionally before and didn’t add it in the chart above because price is always a varying factor from one region to another as well the price keeps changing by time and on arrival of new devices so I preferred it not to add. Any way now I’ve added the price factor as well and that actually makes it a bit biased towards Lumia 800 which will cost at Euro 420/- that is lower than the price tag of Nokia N9 16GB  – prices are as from initial announcement of both devices at Nokia Conversations.

And if talking about the price in Pakistan, Lumia 800 has not yet been launched and we don’t have any idea about when it will be launched here in Pakistan but if evaluating the price only with N9’s price which is currently around Rs. 48,000/- inclusive of all taxes I guess Lumia 800 will be around the same price tag up to Rs. 50,000/- (may be after being stable from a bit high value) it should be actually not more than that for consumer attraction and at that time N9 may have dropped its value down.

Apart from everything if you consider more towards the apps and the ecosystem for the platform, then of course Nokia Lumia 800 is a long go device with a bigger range of apps at Windows Marketplace. Though Nokia N9 has some attraction for the developers who look busy making Qt based apps for N9 or MeeGo/Harmattan.
