Nokia GEM: A 100% Touch – What Nokia is really up-to?

A new concept phone (but official): Nokia GEM, 100% touch device by Nokia Research Center (NRC)

If you remember recently at Nokia World 2011, Nokia presented a prototype of a bendable phone Nokia Kinetic. It’s not too long now that Nokia Research Center has released a new concept phone “GEM”, which shows an entire mobile device being a touchscreen.

“The GEM device changes appearance from camera to phone or map according to the function selected by the user. It could even display advertising messages on the back of the phone. The back and front are also interactive, making it possible to pinch and zoom the rear of the phone while getting a constant clear view of the image on the front.”

“Now, when you launch an application like the camera, your mobile phone still looks like a mobile phone, but with GEM, when you launch the camera application, the whole phone looks like a camera.” Jarkko told Nokia Conversations.

Jarkko Saunamäki is the Senior Design Manager at Nokia who has led the team which invented GEM.

Nokia has really done really great job inventing things or even ideas which later have turned to benefit other manufacturers as well. We have seen Nokia N9 turning into reality with a really pure swipe user interface but for how long Nokia is going to keep this thing updated, we are not sure. But the idea of Swipe User Interface has already clicked and gained appreciations being most friendly and quicker in operation. Who knows it may start being implementing slowly in the devices from other manufacturers?

Second, the bendable phone created a huge hype and now this fully touchscreen phone with virtual interfaces of applications has provided another idea of how the consumer devices can turned to be in future.

What do you think about all this concept? Do tell us.
