Hasselblad True Zoom Camera Moto Mod Revealed with 10x Optical Zoom

It was coming up in news steadily about a camera Moto Mod that was reportedly being built by Hasselblad. Finally the curtain has been pulled off and a fully featured camera module has been revealed with the name – True Zoom.

Moto Z and Moto Z Force were launched back in June when the company introduced along the Moto Mods that transform the compatible devices into something like a speaker, a projector or a battery pack. That left a camera mod in rumors which later appeared in renders of a Moto Mod being developed Hasselblad.

Hasselblad’s True Zoom will snap-on to the Moto Z, Moto Z Force or the newly launched Moto Z Play. Even though the smartphones have their own 13, 16 and 23 MP shooters, the True Zoom features only 12 megapixels sensor that is fewer than the lowest 13 MP camera in Moto Z Droid. But it’s justified well with the pixel size of the True Zoom that is much larger than the smartphone’s own camera modules and is supposed to capture better photos.

Being a dedicated camera item, its sensor is still sized as 1/2.3″ – a little larger than high-end smartphone camera sensors. I was expecting it to have a larger sensor in size. It comes with a fully featured zoom lens that gives you a 35mm equivalent 250mm zoom with 10x optical zoom. You have the option to go even further with additional 4x digital zoom.

The zoom lens has a variable aperture of f/3.5 to f/6.5 at different zooming levels. Macro shots are capable to take at minimum focus distance of 5cm at widest angle. Zooming in will increase the focus distance as long as 1.5 meters at 10x zoom. Digital zooming won’t impact on the focus distance.

The camera mod comes with optical image stabilization but so do the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. So it’s only a matter of performance which I believe that the Hasselblad mod should be better. Additionally, the module comes with a Xenon flash which is also a plus point but it also comes with professional mode letting you control over manual focus, white balance, variable aperture, ISO and exposure.

But as expected, it has a big price of $299 (PKR. ~31,000/-) that we believe is much higher than it should be. It will be available globally from motorola.com in September. Checkout the sample shots after the break.
