OPPO has started teasing about its joining at Mobile World Congress that is starting this Sunday with a smartphone focused on photography.

The Chinese smartphone maker has sent out media invitations while teasing about its plans for announcing a new smartphone with camera capable of capturing 5x zoomed shots. The invitation card doesn’t reveal anything but a graphic conveying a clear message with “Go 5x Further”.

So it’s definitely a smartphone camera that OPPO wants you to get curious about. If we get even closer, the maximum we can get is to know the zooming capability of this upcoming smartphone camera. That’s the department most smartphone cameras have failed as well as many smartphone makers have come up with their own approaches to provide lossless zoom.

Not an Ordinary Smartphone Camera Zoom

Digital zoom function in smartphone cameras just crop and increase the size of a shot destroying image quality. To improve in that category of smartphone photography, many manufacturers have adapted different methods.

The most recent lossless zooming method was from Apple that incorporated a telephoto lens along side a more traditional wide-angle lens to achieve a 2x optical zoom in iPhone 7 Plus. To provide a fixed optical zoom level, a telephoto lens would be a good enough because mechanical lens is not a choice in today’s slim smartphones. If you haven’t forgotten Nokia was first to provide lossless zoom of up to 5x with Nokia 808 PureView in 2012 and then with Lumia 1020 in 2013 with their own method of oversampling by using 41 megapixel higher pixel count.

We’ll see what OPPO has to show off as their 5x zoom technology. There indeed are endless possibilities which today’s smartphone makers are trying hard to bring as their innovations. The mega event starting this month is just about to bring all those innovations to the world.

“This remarkable achievement is the result of an extensive, year-long R&D process, combined with OPPO’s unparalleled expertise in smartphone imaging technology.” Sky Li, VP of OPPO and MD of International Mobile Business said while speaking about the technology, “We chose MWC to unveil the ‘5x’ technology with the belief that we can inspire the industry to aim higher, and continue to create pioneering products that give amazing experiences to consumers.”

OPPO will be announcing about the smartphone with this 5x technology on February 27th, so there is not a big gap to wait for, it’s just a week.
