Samsung announced Exynos 9 series 8895 SoC – 10nm, Mali G71 GPU

Samsung-Exynos-9-series-8895

Samsung has announced the new Exynos chipset based on its proprietary 10nm FinFET process technology which was first announced with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835. To compete with Qualcomm’s counterpart, here it is – Exynos 9 series 8895.

The new Exynos 9 chip promises to provide up to 27% higher performance and 40% lower consumption than previous chips built on 14nm process. While the company has not disclosed which device it will be shipped into but based on its timing, we believe Samsung’s next flagship – namely Galaxy S8.

Samsung has been into semiconductor manufacturing for quite a few years now. The company launched Exynos 8890 last year which was based on 14nm manufacturing process. It was the first chip that carried out in-house custom designed processing cores — M1 along side the ARM Cortex-A53 cores.

The new Exynos 9 chip will have the second generation of Samsung’s custom designed CPU cores (probably 4 cores of M2) in addition to the 4 cores of the same Cortex-A53. The 8895 chip is built up with ARM’s Mali-G71, the GPU built upon Bifrost architecture for premium gaming and VR applications.

Exynos 8895 features multi-format codec (MFC) which is promising to deliver extensive multimedia experience in 3D graphics. It also reduces latency for 4K UHD VR playback. The processor supports 120 frames per second with 4K video playback and recording.

Where Exynos 8895 has a separate processing unit for enhanced security for mobile payments featuring support of recently adapted components like iris or fingerprint scanners, the new chip features an embedded visual processing unit (VPU) to recognise and analyse objects with improved video tracking. Other camera supportive features like panoramic image processing and machine vision technology are also the key elements of the new chipset.

keeps up with the competition by equipping the similar gigabit LTE modem like Snapdragon 835. It is rated o deliver data throughput at maximum of 1Gbps downlink and 150Mbps uplink with 5 and 2 carrier aggregation.

The Exynos 9 series 8895 is said to be in mass production right now. You can still expect that Samsung Galaxy S8’s delayed launch may have such added values that the Korean giant would want to overcome its losses and degraded reputations after ill-fated Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung Launches Premium Exynos 9 Series Processor Built on the World’s First 10nm FinFET Process Technology

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced the launch of its latest premium application processor (AP), the Exynos 9 Series 8895. This is Samsung’s first processor chipset to take advantage of the most advanced and industry leading 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology with improved 3D transistor structure, which allows up to 27% higher performance while consuming 40% less power when compared to 14nm technology.

The new Exynos 9 Series 8895 is the first processor of its kind to embed a gigabit LTE modem that supports five carrier aggregation, or 5CA. It delivers fast and stable data throughput at max.1Gbps (Cat.16) downlink with 5CA and 150Mbps (Cat.13) uplink with 2CA.

The Exynos 8895 is an octa-core processor, comprising of four of Samsung’s 2ndgeneration custom designed CPU cores for improved performance and power efficiency in addition to four Cortex®-A53 cores. With Samsung Coherent Interconnect (SCI) technology, the latest processor integrates a heterogeneous system architecture that allows faster computing for a wide range of applications such as artificial intelligence, and deep learning.

The Exynos 8895 also delivers unsurpassed multimedia experience with its powerful GPU and multi-format codec (MFC) as well as next level 3D graphic performance that minimizes latency for 4K UHD VR and gaming experience with ARM®’s latest Mali™-G71 GPU.

In addition, with its advanced MFC, the processor supports video recording and playback at a maximum resolution of 4K UHD at 120fps. It also comes with video processing technology that enables a higher quality experience by enhancing the image quality; for example, for VR (Virtual Reality) applications, the Exynos 8895 delivers a realistic and immersive VR video experience at 4K resolution.

The Exynos 8895 has a separate processing unit for enhanced security solutions required for mobile payments that use iris or fingerprint recognition as well as an embedded Vision Processing Unit (VPU) that can recognize and analyze items or movements for improved video tracking, panoramic image processing, and machine vision technology.

“In addition to being built on the most advanced 10nm FinFET process technology, the new Exynos 9 Series 8895 incorporates Samsung’s cutting-edge technologies including a 2nd generation custom CPU, gigabit LTE modem, and more” said Ben Hur, Vice President of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. “With industry leading technologies like VPU, the Exynos 8895 will drive the innovation of next generation smartphones, VR headsets, and automotive infotainment system.”

The Exynos 9 Series 8895 is currently in mass production
