IM for Nokia N8 – Official Chat Client for Symbian^3

Last time we informed about the Chat client for S60v5 which worked fine on Nokia N8 or other Symbian^3 devices. But that was having some issues with Email client and so we warned before using that Chat client.

But now this is not the case. An official version of Chat client from Nokia has hit the Ovi Store and is available for download directly from the Nokia N8, E7, C7, C6-01. Just pickup your phone and download new IM for Nokia.

What do you get?

What do you get with this official Chat client?

  • Services like Ovi, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and MySpace.
  • A dedicated widget on home screen
  • Integration with phone Contacts
  • Notifications when not in the App

Chat Widget on home screen

Widget on the home screen indicates the current status of your Chat client. It also gives you the option to quick sign-in and change status right from the widget without opening or visiting Chat client. When not signed in you can tap on the right part of the widget to sign in, provided that you have already setup services in the Chat client.

On the left part of the widget you get a big status icon, telling you either you are online or offline or even busy/away. Long tapping the icon will popup a Symbian^3 context menu with available options to change status. Status icon and menu options are dependent to the service.

Integration with Phone Contacts

Integration between IM Chat Client and Phone Contacts is initiated from the Chat client itself. Currently there is no way to initiate integration process from the Phone Contacts. Open the Chat client select long-tap on a contact and choose “link to phone contact” and then you get an option to create new contact or update existing one.

It’s quick without any delay. Next time you visit your Phone Contacts and select a linked contact, you will see a new option of “Chat” with the chat contacts linked with this phone Contact. This is simple.
