Facebook Places Check-in with Opera Mobile 11 – Symbian

Geo Location feature is actually the key for any app to use mobile’s location based services. And while it has been introduced in Opera Mobile 10.1 version earlier but has been improved even more in Opera Mobile 11.

For Facebook Places/Check-in feature, It’s Symbian’s default web browser which can’t yet facilitate any webpage or website to use embedded location based services. That’s actually the problem why Facebook Places/Check-in feature doesn’t work on it. It will not work in any browser which can’t give a webpage access to your location.

Well Opera Mobile 11 (10.1 earlier before) has been enabled with the Geo Location feature to use your current location and give webpages the access to this information after your permission.

UPDATE: (15-05-2011) As the new Touch UI of facebook Mobile Website has been rolled out to most of the devices, Opera Mobile 11 also got affected with this new change and all requests to http://touch.facebook.com are now being redirected to http://m.facebook.com. Hence the following post is no more of use for places/check-in.

We’ll update this post if there comes a new update in future related to this.

UPDATE: (21-05-2011) Still NO Touch User Interface but Facebook Places/Check-in is back now. You have to deal with some crappy mobile interface.

Some users were reporting earlier about Opera Mobile 10.1 Geo Location feature for not working correctly or not working at all or hanging the GPS service. It’s recommended that you upgrade to Opera Mobile 11 as this feature has been improved.

Following is the way you do it.

  • Make sure you are on http://touch.facebook.com
  • Sign in to your Facebook account.
  • Click on the “Places” Tab or the “My Location” button followed by the Status text box.

  • Asking for your permission if you want to share your location or not. Agreeing is the option to choose now. Click “Agree”.

  • Once again click “Share Location”. You also might want Opera to remember your choice if don’t want it to ask you again for this. Check “Remember Choice”.

  • Great! you get the new button “Check in”. Just click and try your self.

  • You can now add near by places or select any near by place to proceed with checking in.

  • After selecting a place, write down what you want to share and click “Check in”

  • Activity will be added and will be posted to your profile page as well.

  • Oh im having trouble like Lorenzo, dere's no button for search my friend in my list. How do we fix that?

  • @Lorenzo @Jasldlr @Neko
    Thanks for reporting but
I just tried with tagging friends. It works flawlessly..

If you can't see a button for tagging friends then you might need to check your privacy settings on Facebook perhaps?

I'll post about it if there is any privacy settings concerns with tagging friends.

    Thanks

  • I have a Nokia 5230 with opera 11 installed. I also use opera on my pc. I can use fb places on the pc which isn't much use as it's a desktop! Can't get it on the mobile. I followed instructions above but Terms of Service & the following screens don't appear when I click on the Places tab. I just get a friends location & mine that I posted from the pc.

    • You might have rejected terms & conditions and saved your answer at first.. Perhas

      do following and try again
      - in opera settings > privacy...
      - Clear cache. And
      - Clear shared locations.. http://twitpic.com/4tsjej

restart Opera Mobile 11 and check if it prompts with T&Cs

you can also try removing and reinstalling Opera Mobile 11

Also places location sharing works on Opera Mobile 11 and wont work on Opera Mini

      • thanks, you saved my phone from getting trashed, tried to make it work with opera mini but installed opera 11 and now it works perfect=) thanks thanks thanks =)
