The drawbacks of Facebook Login Approvals

I have recently posted about the Facebook’s Login Approvals, the extended login security feature implemented by Facebook for their users to give them a secure environment for their social activities and to restrict unauthorized access of their accounts. If you have read the earlier post in full and have determined how to secure your account then now you need to know that how you can end up with a locked account due to this extended security feature for a few reasons.

Well these reasons are not supposed to be the flaw at Facebook and can happen due to several other reasons. But Facebook has to provide some other solution in these cases. Like Google already have given the option to add a secondary phone number in case of you loose the access to your primary phone. As well Google gives you extra random secure codes to keep in your pocket along with the things you normally keep with you. You can use these codes as well if you are not able to receive code via your phone for any reason. You might want to read about the Google’s 2-Step Verification similar to Facebook’s Login Approvals

What’s the drawback?

Let’s suppose you have enabled the Login Approvals feature on your Facebook account and you need to provide a confirmation security code – that you will receive on your mobile phone – each time before proceeding with login on an unrecognized computer.

Now consider the cases below.

You need or want to login to facebook on an unrecognized computer.

  • What if you don’t have access to your phone right now? for any reason.
  • What if your phone has been stolen or lost somwhere?
  • What if your mobile network is down and you can’t receive text messages at all?

If any of the above cases happen, you will not be able to access your facebook account – on any computer or device which is not already recognized for your account – because of not receiving the security code in time that you need to enter while logging in. But there is only a single way which is that you have to reach another previously recognized computer or mobile device to login – Checkout the original post about Login Approvals to know about recognized computers.

Now suppose

  • You are on travel, on a trip, or any where out with your laptop (which haven’t yet got recognized for your FB Account) and your mobile phone. What if now you loose access to your phone, or it gets stollen, or there is no network coverage where you currently are – And you need to sign in to facebook?

Where will you get a computer which was previously recognized for your account? You get no 2nd option to gain access to your facebook account in that time.

Only thing to remember if you are a regular Facebook user.

  • Get your laptop or your device recognized for your Facebook account to avoid these circumstances.

  • How can you write a tech blog with such crappy writing?  2 step verification is a necessary evil these days.  You LOSE access and items get STOLEN.

      sorry to hear that...

Option 1: if you  didn't receive any SMS at all from facebook even after multiple tries, then you must consider contact your Mobile Network or Facebook.

Option 2: if you are receiving SMS but it's blank with no code in it, then your mobile network is probably changing the format of the SMS content that is not understandable by your mobile phone..... I personally have faced such a problem on an Android phone.... but putting the SIM into another phone e.g. Nokia one will be able to show the text message.

  • What if you no longer have the phone number that is needed for login approval and you have a new number. And none of your devices are recognized. What can I do?

  • Man take it from me DONT use the fucken Facebook security code. my recognized device';s motherboard was burned so i changed it. now when i try to access it i am not receiving any code(its now 2 days) + because my recognized device is not recognized anymore...i cant go to facebook any more. the cell phone operator is saying their system is 'ok'

  • THIS I can't stress enough has locked me out of facebook, and worst part is the actual phone that was stolen wasn't bothered about by the police which leaves me with... £200 down and loss of friends from facebook due to my phone being stolen...I was lucky to have a backup phone but not registered I have filed three reports all to no avail...and worst part is they don't give a fuck about us (pardon my language but it's the way the point best gets said) as if they did would I be saying this?
