Flickr partnering with Nokia to bring up-to-date Maps with Geotagging

Flickr moves on with Nokia Maps
to bring better & quality mapping experience.

Flickr (A Yahoo! company) has officially announced that they have partnered with Nokia to bring up-to-date map data tiles from Nokia’s NAVTEQ maps to help their users geotagging their photos, discovering places, or simply want to see where other people’s amazing images were taken. Flickr will be providing now more detailed maps from the most reputed mapping experience from Nokia.

First, we’ve partnered with Nokia to bring you their map style and satellite images. Whether you’re geotagging one of your photos, discovering places, or simply want to see where other people’s amazing images were taken – you’ll see up-to-date maps from one of the largest and best mapping providers in the world. Our new maps will provide you a much greater level of detail and let you zoom in much further than before.

Flickr has been providing geotagging services for their users to get-tag their photos and make other people know where on the earth the pictures were taken. To provide those interfaces on the web or in mobile applications till date Flickr has only used Open Street Maps (OSM) data where community members put their efforts with their own knowledge to map local regions or what ever the place members know about. Open Street Maps are more like Google Map Maker where the same experience of crowd sourcing can be found but are not managed as much as the community at Google Map Maker does.

Now when collaborating with Nokia for their popular quality maps, Flickr has also mentioned that the map data tiles from Open Street Maps will be continued on their system where needed.

Second, we continue to work with the Open Street Map (OSM) community and automatically provide OSM map tiles for areas where commercial maps don’t have full coverage. One amazing thing about Flickr is that you travel all across the world and take photos. We need to have the best maps – even in the most exotic places – and partnering with the OSM community allows us to give you high quality maps everywhere.
