Nokia Lumia 920 and supposedly 8 megapixels PureView – So we didn’t really understand PureView?

The things with Nokia Lumia 920’s rumour are now getting grown with more information within. The most important part of the information is the PureView camera with 8 megapixels and the additional information include the wireless charging capability, 32GB Internal Storage, 1GB RAM, 1.5Ghz dual-core processor, 4.5″ HD Display, 1.3 megapixels camera on front.

Without arguing, if we take the specifications seriously for a moment, the aspect, that is questionable in this news (supposedly the confirmed news by theverge however) is the “JUST 8” megapixels camera to be with PureView Pro imaging technology by Nokia. It’s now understood by many that what the PureView technology is (as far as now). That is, the biggest factor in the technology is the pixel-binning (oversampling the pixels) which is understood by taking the 41 megapixels sensor into account and then bring a superb quality image in the reasonable resolution e.g. 8 megapixels by binning almost 5 pixels into 1. But if really this was the only technique behind the PureView technology then what the rumoured 8 megapixels in new Lumia(s) will derive the final resolution with the PureView Pro technology? 1.6 megapixels image? Well that’s a joke.

Still I don’t say that it’s the false news. However I can say that you can’t have a larger sensor (like 41 megapixels and 1/1.2″) in such a slim device as illustrated above or in previous leaked images. But to talk about the said 8 megapixels sensor and PureView relation, if we say there could be some other way if not pixels-binning? Why not take a look at what Damian Dinning (@PhoneDaz), the Imaging Head at Nokia, is answering (in very difficult but in English of course) about the PureView technology if it could work with smaller resolution sensors?

PureView is a blend of new imaging sw+hw tech 2 create leading performance/capabilites. There r many diff ways this can b applied.

(sw=software and hw=hardware)

The above answer from Damian was in response to a question regarding the smaller resolution camera that what how the technology would work if used with cameras having smaller resolution (like 21MP in question or even smaller like above 8MP).

Damian answered each of the questions asked in the following discussion but only the quoted above is the one I could understand a bit as the other answers were actually not meant to be understood perhaps ;-)

Well it could be true with 8MP PureView only if Damian’s response actually meant that there is not only the larger sensor that the PureView technology can work with. “There are different ways this can be applied”. Mhmm… if that’s true then, instead of the techniques behind PureView we have known so far, there must be another surprise with 8MP PureView in upcoming Lumia device(s).

That also can be true in a way that Nokia and Damian has said in various occasions that the number of pixels are not the factor, but how these pixels are used, is.

But according to all this things (if they are true) then PureView Pro is not just that we have learnt so far. It’s the Imaging Brand from Nokia where the quality imaging is done in whatever way or by whatever technique. That’s how I am taking it now.

Could the new theory of PureView with upcoming Lumia series be more interesting than the one we already know? What do you think? want to make a guess? do it! as it’s just a day ahead when the all the will be revealed.
