WhatsApp and Viber for Nokia Asha – Social messaging and VoIP calling on Nokia Asha devices

Recently Nokia Conversations announced about the software update on Nokia Asha 501 which brought the user interface changes and features upgrades to user ends. The WhatsApp addition was prominently disclosed which was announced during the last month’s Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. The update brought the core changes in the software e.g. Voice over IP support along with the API to help third-party software developers. In addition few other Nokia Asha devices gets hold on to Viber calling support.

Get WhatsApp on the Nokia Asha 501

WhatsApp for Nokia Asha 501 supports text messaging with emoticons, attaching images/videos and record/send voice messages. Once installed, it gets integrated into Nokia Asha software which is more than just a third party app. Notifications appear on the device as well as WhatsApp activity shows up via Fastlane, the second screen where shortcuts of favourite apps and content stand.

After having your Nokia Asha 501 updated with the latest software updated, you can download WhatsApp for free. WhatsApp will come preinstalled on Nokia Asha 500, Asha 502 and Asha 503 Dual SIM when those phones get available.

Viber now available for three of the Nokia Asha phones

Another addition to Nokia Asha devices (for now limited to Nokia Asha 308, Asha 310 and Asha 311) is the cross-platform “Viber”. One of the most popular voice calling over 3G/WiFi app, Viber is now available for select Nokia Asha phones. Viber for Nokia Asha supports regular messages and conversations with single contact or group of contacts (Group messaging).

The user interface is similar to what Viber gives in high end devices. On the first start it syncs your contacts collecting those who already have installed Viber on their phones (no-matter which platform or device).

There is no official words about the availability of the apps on other Nokia Asha devices where they are currently not available. However we hope they will soon reach other Asha devices sooner or later.
