Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge – Refined design, Bigger battery, Better camera, Waterproof

Following pretty same and cheap Galaxy design language for years, Samsung broke the chain last year and launched a change over with Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge first time with metal and glass. I personally liked a Galaxy smartphone very first time when it turned 6 for actually being premium. However those S6 devices even weren’t proved too great for its price.

The Korean smartphone maker has now launched the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge at the MWC. Design wise both the devices follow the predecessor S6’s and S6 edge’s with some refined touches which are good at visualising. Borrowing the features from previous models, both the new devices bring a wide array improvements and most importantly as it was being expected already the S7 and its Edge counterpart add features which went missing from the S6 models.

Over at the features and specifications, the standard Galaxy S7 retains display size of the 5.1″ with QHD resolution of 2560×1440 and Super AMOLED from S6 while the new S7 Edge has an enlarged display of 5.5″ with all the same display features including QHD resolution.

Both of the new phones are powered by Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 depending on markets alongside 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB storage variants. Both devices support micro SD cards. Both the devices feature IP68 water and dust resistance, which allows the device to stay underwater over 1.5 meters for 30 minutes at a time. The ports are not covered by anything as the devices include sealed ports for water resistance.

Instead of USB Type-C, Samsung still used the traditional micro USB port to retain compatibility with the last year’s Gear VR headset.

Interesting thing to note is that Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge has lower than S6’s resolution camera. It’s 12MP now instead of the 16MP before. But of course pixel size is now larger as 1.4µm than 1.12µm which absolutely can take better or may be equal quality photos but sure the low-light shots should be much better with S7’s camera. Again lens aperture f/1.7 is larger than previous one and the focal length is also 26mm which can take a little wide angle shots.

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge run Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface. Standard S7 will be backed up by a 3000mAh battery while the S7 Edge will feature a 3600mAh battery.

Both the devices will be available in the US starting on March 11th. Preorders will begin on February 23rd. The Galaxy S7 will be available in black and gold colors. The Galaxy S7 Edge will be available in black, gold, and silver colors.
