Microsoft has just revealed its plans to bring its database software SQL Server to Linux operating system. SQL Server would be most significant software from Microsoft on Linux platform of which the preview is already available on Linux starting today.
This is the first time SQL Server will run on a platform other than Windows. One must think that Microsoft is really up with adopting changes which is a must to go with to proceed in today’s industry. This move is also hinting that Microsoft has its plans to prioritize its database platform across two major operating systems.
SQL Server is not the first thing in relation between Microsoft and Linux. Visual Studio has already been gone open and available on Linux and Mac OS X. Microsoft Azure is another one. However this is the key element that SQL Server has never run on any other platform but Windows.
Microsoft has already started private preview of the SQL Server on Linux today. While having it announced, the public availability will be around mid next year.
