Finally, Sony has disclosed the launch date and pricing information about its virtual reality headset PlayStation VR. Sony revealed about the VR headset during the Game Developers Conference 2016 currently going on in San Francisco.
Officially announced in September 2015 about the PlayStation VR, Sony kept its release date and pricing information from public. According to the recent announcement, the PlayStation VR headset will cost USD $399 (or PKR ~41,800/-) and will launch in October this year.
Sony has also disclosed that more than 230 developers including smaller independent teams to larger studios are already making games for PlayStation VR. In numbers you can expect over 50 games available until end of the year from the launch in October.
At the launch later this year, Sony also has plans to offer the Playroom VR – that will include six Sony built games, as a free download from PlayStation Store for all the PlayStation VR owners to have kick start experience of the Sony’s virtual reality headset.
The retail price will include the PlayStation VR headset, a processor unit and a couple of cables including headset connection cable, HDMI and USB cables, stereo headphones, power cord and adaptor. Have a look at the following image – that’s what you will get for $399.
The price of course vary from region to region as it will cost USD $399 in the United States, CAD $549 in Canada, €399 in Europe, £349 in the United Kingdom, $549.95 in Australia, and ¥44,980 in Japan.
PlayStation VR, to work properly, will need to have PlayStation 4 camera unit which is not included in the above price and will cost additional $60. As well the Move controllers may also be needed to buy separately as required for some games – they cost $50. Some games need to play with two Move controllers.
When comparing to the Oculus Rift, it starts with the base price of $599 and will begin to ship to pre-order customers later this month. While the other HTC Vive, which is scheduled to arrive in April this year, costs $800.
Another major difference is that PlayStation VR will run on PlayStation 4 console unlike the others as they will work with PC with their own specified PC hardware requirements.
