Facebook Messenger now supports Group Video Chat/Calls

Keeping up with adding new features into their social private messaging platform, Facebook has just enabled Group Video Chat in Messenger. This group video calling feature follows native camera experience introduced just last week in the messaging app.

One-to-one video calls on Facebook Messenger were added in April this year and now Group Video Calls are being introduced in Facebook Messenger.

The newly added feature of group video calling allows up to 50 persons to join in and choose to just listen in or via voice. All of them can be on camera as well but only 6 people’s video feed will be shown on the messenger. Those six people will be chosen by the messenger itself based on their dominance as speaker – means the most you participate in discussion, more the chances you get to be on screen, after once the people in your group chat exceeds the number six.

How to get started?

While the feature has been rolled out to Messenger website but if you are on the phone, first you need the latest version of Messenger.

  • You can now create a new group conversation or jump into an existing one.
  • Then tap on the video icon on the upper right of the screen to enter the video chat.
  • Everyone in the group will be notified about your participation.

Additionally you can also directly ring just a few people or the whole group.

According to Facebook, 245 million people have been making video calls each month and the new feature of Group Video Chat is now being rolled out to iOS based devices – Android to follow.

More and more people use messaging in groups for lots of different reasons like keeping everyone up to date, planning a family vacation or to share a few jokes. With 245 million people making video calls in Messenger every month, now we’re bringing everyone on Messenger the ability to turn group chats into face-to-face conversations no matter where you are
