Careem and Uber currently under Review – No Ban Imposed Yet

Recently gone viral story about restrictions or ban over the taxi services Careem and Uber, has just been turned down by the government of Punjab.

According to earlier reports today, Punjab and Sindh governments had declared the services as illegal while they were operating in the country without proper commercial licensing and permit for the routes.

Umar Saif – chairman of Punjab Information Technology Board, has released a statement over the issue informing that no ban has been imposed on the mobile based ride-hailing services. It was an informal discussion among the officials and only informed about the traffic police office Lahore about the development.

Saif first tweeted for people who were actually going crazy over the the matter and holding government responsible for doing bad job. He told them to hold their judgements.

“This is being reviewed within the government, we are coming up with a formal policy. This letter was an internal memo and has prematurely been made public.” – Umar Saif told the Dawn. “There are two ways that a government can approach such companies when they launch: 1) treat them as a taxi service or 2) treat them as a service that government’s can regulate.” – he further added.

In an interview to Sama TV, he repeated the same while taking examples from other countries where the similar business model is running with government’s regulatory bodies.
