MediaTek is getting serious about smartphone gaming. The chipmaker has launched the latest 12 nm Helio G70 and Helio G80 chipsets targeting budget and mid-range devices.
Introduced with the launch of Helio G90 in 2019, the new Helio G-series was bound to help devices (inexpensive compared to top brands running on Qualcomm) take mobile gaming at the next level. First thing first the G90 was thrown out to compete with Snapdragon 730 which is Qualcomm’s best mid-range chipset. The first smartphone to carry the Helio G90 was the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro.
Previously the Helio G90 equipped with two performance cores of Cortex-A76 clocked at 2.05GHz and six Cortex-A55 clocked at 2.0GHz. It had a high-performance Mali G76 GPU. But the new G70 and G80 feature 2x Cortex-A75 and 6x Cortex-A55 along with a downgraded Mali G52 GPU.
While both the G70 and G80 feature the platform configuration, the G80 boosts CPU and GPU clock speeds for even higher performance.
The G70 and G80 will share the features from Helio G90 including the MediaTek’s HyperEngine technology. It balances the use of CPU, GPU, and memory intelligently but also manages Wi-Fi and 4G/LTE in several ways. It rapidly (automatically) switches between Wi-Fi and LTE networks within just 13 seconds.
Both the G70 and G80 chips enable multi-camera design in smartphones with up to 48MP image sensor.
Realme C3 will be the first smartphone to feature Helio G70 while both the chips are expected to feature in devices in early 2020.
