Samsung’s RAM Plus feature allows to expand RAM virtually, starting with Galaxy A52s

Samsung has finally joined the bandwagon of RAM expansion virtually, The feature, already available from other brands, allows users to add more memory (virtually) to the phone, in addition to RAM.

The South Korean smartphone giant recently mentioned the feature when it launched the Galaxy A52s in August. The company also mentioned when it launched in India earlier this month. However, no detail was provided. Maybe the feature was not available out of the box as it was rolled out just recently through a software update.

The recent firmware update (version A528BXXU1AUH9) is rolling out to devices in India. The update brings the RAM Plus feature to Galaxy A52s devices, as reported by SamMobile. After the update, users will be able to add 4GB of virtual memory to the phone in addition to the RAM. Though, the update has other feature improvements as well.

Other smartphone makers like Vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi, and Realme have been offering the feature for quite a few months. Every one of them has its own name for the feature, Virtual RAM, Dynamic RAM Expansion, or Extended RAM, Samsung chose RAM Plus.

How much virtual memory they can add to the system? That’s a valid question but the answer is simple. It depends on the manufacturer knowing how much virtual memory their phone can work with when needed.

How Virtual RAM Works?

Thanks to Android 11’s better memory management that allowed the vendors to use its paging feature. Paging exists in all modern operating systems for years but it’s been possible in Andoird only recently. So in a very easy language, it allows the software to pick a chunk of memory from internal storage, when available, and allocate it for random access memory. Performance is not equally better as physical RAM but sure it helps the system at a level where the physical RAM runs out of memory.
