Samsung announced its latest Galaxy S series lineup earlier this month with Galaxy S23 standard, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. The three smartphones will reach the Korean smartphone maker’s fans around the world throughout the year 2023.
Most of you will be the ones who would have been thinking to upgrade from your existing Galaxy S22 devices to the latest S23 ones. In this article, we’ll be taking a closer look at the premium Galaxy S23 Ultra and the predecessor Galaxy S22 Ultra. By the end of the article, you should have enough knowledge of what the Galaxy S23 Ultra has to offer. It must help you determine if it’s worth upgrading from your existing Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Starting with the design, both phones feature a glass front and back with an aluminium frame. In terms of dimensions, the Galaxy S23 Ultra measures 163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9 mm while the S22 Ultra measures 163.3 x 77.9 x 8.9 mm, making the S23 Ultra slightly larger and heavier, weighing 234 grams compared to the S22 Ultra’s 228 grams.
In short, here is it in a clear aspect.
Both phones feature a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and 1750 nits peak brightness. The display size for both phones is 6.8 inches, with a resolution of 3088 x 1440 pixels and a screen-to-body ratio of around 90% and a pixel density of around 500ppi.
The protection on the display is a little toughest with the S23 Ultra featuring Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The Galaxy S22 Ultra featured Gorilla Glass Victus+.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra runs on Android 13 out of the box with One UI 5.1, while the S22 Ultra runs on Android 12. S22 Ultra is also upgradable to Android 13.
The S23 Ultra is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset SM8550-AC based on 4nm architecture, while the S22 Ultra is powered by the Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (4 nm). The S23 Ultra features an octa-core CPU with one Cortex-X3 core, two 2.8 GHz Cortex-A715 cores, two cores of 2.8 GHz Cortex-A710 and three cores of 2.0 GHz Cortex-A510
The Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the other hand, features an octa-core CPU with one core of 3.00 GHz Cortex-X2, three cores of 2.50 GHz Cortex-A710, and four cores of 1.80 GHz Cortex-A510.
Both phones come in variants with up to 1TB of internal storage and two RAM options of 8GB and 12GB. The S23 Ultra, however, does not have 128GB storage and offers two 256GB variants with 8GB and 12GB. Neither of the phones offers an expandable memory slot whereas the S23 Ultra has a more robust UFS 4.0 storage compared to S22 Ultra’s UFS 3.1.
Both phones feature a camera setup with four modules, however, the Galaxy S23 Ultra includes a 200 MP main camera compared to the 108 MP of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This could literally attract you to dump your S22 Ultra and get the new S23 Ultra. But hold on, Other cameras on the phones are pretty much identical.
A 10 MP periscope telephoto camera with 10x optical zoom, a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 12 MP ultrawide camera are completely identical to what you got in S22 Ultra. Though the main camera on S23 Ultra has around 85% more (but smaller than the ones in S22 Ultra) pixels the physical sensor size is similar to S22 Ultra’s 108MP camera.
The S23 Ultra features video recording capabilities up to 8K resolution with 24/30fps, while the S22 Ultra was limited to 8K/24fps. 4K@30/60fps. Galaxy S23 Ultra has a smaller 12 MP selfie camera compared to the 40 MP one in Galaxy S22 Ultra. Though both support 4K video recording.
The S23 Ultra is equipped with a 5000mAh battery, which supports 45W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. The S22 Ultra also features a 5000mAh battery, but with slightly slower charging speeds, with 25W wired charging and 12W wireless charging.
Many other features like the in-display fingerprint sensors and other varieties of sensors are identical in the Galaxy S23 Ultra as they were in the predecessor. Samsung DeX, Samsung Wireless DeX, Bixby, and Samsung Pay are all there.
In conclusion, both the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Ultra are premium smartphones that come with top-of-the-line features and capabilities. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is the one you might already have used and the Galaxy S23 Ultra is newer and a little more powerful. A little bit of advancement in the camera capabilities, and faster battery charging through the same battery capacity.
Visually, you can’t really tell a difference between the two devices. So first thing, if important to you, you can’t actually stand out in the crowd with the new Galaxy S23 Ultra in your hands. On paper, the Galaxy S23 Ultra indeed has a little bit of edge over its predecessor but its base storage starts from 256GB making its cheaper variant actually more expensive than the base model of S22 Ultra.
We can’t really advise you to run for the upgrade until we review the latest Galaxy S23 Ultra. Apart from that, keeping with Galaxy S22 Ultra, for now, is the better option unless you have an extra budget and want to be an early bird.
