As the countdown to the December 1 deadline ticks away, Google Account users are on the brink of a significant change in the platform’s policies. Many are worried about the fate of their Gmail messages, photos, and documents as the possibility of content deletions looms.
For the majority of users, which includes 1.8 billion Gmail users and 2 billion Google Photos enthusiasts, there’s a sense of relief. As long as they’ve been active in their Google accounts within the last two years, they are immune to the upcoming content purge.
However, in the shadows lie around 18 million dormant Gmail users and 20 million Google Photos users who may be unknowingly approaching a digital abyss.
Google justifies this data upheaval as a move to enhance security. According to Ruth Kricheli, a Google vice president of product management, inactive accounts are more vulnerable to compromise due to the absence of recent user activity and the likely lack of robust security measures like two-factor authentication (2FA).
Google claims that inactive accounts are “10x less likely than active accounts” to have 2FA. To strengthen your digital security, it is advised to conduct a Google Account Security Checkup, providing a virtual shield against potential breaches.
While the debate over the intrinsic value of safeguarding inactive accounts continues, the impending policy change suggests a broader narrative, possibly linked to the cost implications of storing vast amounts of seemingly unwanted data.
