With Presto, Apple can now update box-packed iPhone to latest iOS version in Stores

Apple is gearing up for the highly anticipated launch of the iPhone 16 lineup later this year, expected in September, with a myriad of design variations, especially for the standard model. Preceding this launch, Apple has been diligently developing a new mechanism that enables employees to update iPhones wirelessly without the need to unbox them, ensuring users receive their devices with the latest software from the get-go.

The “Presto” technology, as coined by prominent analyst Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, is set to revolutionize the update process at Apple Stores. Utilizing MagSafe in conjunction with other wireless tools, this innovative system allows Apple Store employees to seamlessly update iPhone models without ever opening the packaging. Gurman’s insights suggest that Apple aims to deploy this technology next month, with plans for a nationwide rollout across all Apple Stores in the United States by early summer.

The strategic timing of this technology aligns with Apple’s preparations for the iPhone 16 launch. However, it’s worth noting that “Presto” isn’t limited to upcoming models; current iPhone models sold by Apple can also benefit from wireless updates inside the box. Gurman’s initial mention of the technology as a pad-like device for updating sealed iPhone boxes underscores its ingenuity in firmware updates.

The functionality of the “Presto” system is straightforward yet groundbreaking. It activates the device within its packaging, updates the software to the latest version seamlessly, and then powers down the device. This reliance on MagSafe technology ensures exclusivity to iPhones, distinguishing it from other products like Apple’s MacBooks, which also feature MagSafe but in a different context.

Apple’s motivation behind this new technology is clear: to eliminate the sale of iPhones with outdated software and empower users to experience the latest features right out of the box. Additionally, it enables Apple to address any software issues pre-launch, reminiscent of the scenario during the iPhone 15’s release. Further details on the functionality of “Presto” will be shared as they become available, promising a seamless and updated experience for Apple users.
