Microsoft kills Nokia’s Android in favour of Windows Phone

At first Nokia’s decision to adopt Android OS surprised many earlier this year. however this sudden news today was not such a surprising one as it would happen one day we knew. Microsoft has just planned to finish with the Nokia’s Android phones which were once planned to reach mass market with low-end smartphones running Android apps. It exactly means that the Android featuring phones will be no more from Microsoft Devices (formerly Nokia).

Killing the Android from their devices is just related to the OS. The Nokia X line-up will keep coming instead running on Windows Phone OS in future. This is what Stephen Elop said to the employees in an email.

In addition to the portfolio already planned, we plan to deliver additional lower-cost Lumia devices by shifting select future Nokia X designs and products to Windows Phone devices. We expect to make this shift immediately while continuing to sell and support existing Nokia X products.

Remember that Microsoft Devices has announced Nokia X2 with some better hardware. That one and any existing Nokia X, X+ and XL Android smartphones will get support but you are not supposed to expect any newer Android device from Nokia/Microsoft Devices. The lower-cost Lumia smartphones will replace the Android OS on Nokia X devices.

Note that in another email today, Satya Nadella disappointed company’s employees by announcing about a job cut that will affect 18,000 employees. We are moving now to start reducing the first 13,000 positions, and the vast majority of employees whose jobs will be eliminated will be notified over the next six months.
