BLIPS: A Paper Thin Lens turns a Smartphone camera into Microscope

This small lens attached within a slim stripe, that sticks on to the smartphone camera, is capable enough to take micro and macro shots with your smartphone camera.

Believe it or not, trying to take closeup shots with the smartphone camera has been an element for many but the end results of those closeup shots have never been so pleasing. You previously would have tried with attaching a magnifying lens with tapes and pins – the hard way. But BLIPS is a made-up small lens kit that is ready to attach with your smartphone and do the job.

The project BILPS by SmartMicroOptics, was posted a few days ago at Kickstarter and it comes in a really portable set of 2 mini lenses – for micro and macro shots, which according to the makers is world’s thinnest set of microscope lenses for smartphones and tablets.

Come packed within a carrying envelop – sized of credit card, with the reusable adhesive on the sticker, the design of the lens strip is rather easy to use again and again. You can repack them in the envelop and put into your pocket.

If go into details, BLIPS Micro lens is as thin as less than 1.2mm but Macro lens is extremely thin as approximately 0.5mm. The working distance is 12mm (or 1/2 inch) – 

“Blips Micro is able to detect details of about 1/7000 inch (≈1/300 mm), distinguishing single cells or other inhabitants of the micro-world. [It] is less than 1/20 inch (~1.2mm) thick, and turns your phone into an actual digital microscope. You need to keep a distance of ¼ inch (6mm) between the lens and the sample under observation to discover tiny details at a high definition. With the use of the digital zoom it’s possible to achieve magnification of over 100x.”

Both lenses come in the credit card sized carrying case – the Basic Kit that contains a Micro lens and a Macro lens, will cost $23. Another, The Lab Kit that includes additionally the microscope slides and a smartphone stage with a light source will cost $ 46. Buying both gives a discounted price of $57.
