Lenovo to use “Moto” brand name for future smartphones

After having acquiring Motorola Mobility in October 2014, Lenovo announced in January this year that the company will slowly phaseout “Motorola” branding and instead use only “Moto” for its future high-end devices.

The Chinese PC maker now reportedly has announced that not only “Motorola” but its own name “Lenovo” will be not be used for later smartphones it will produce. All the smartphones from now own will use the brand name “Moto”.

Taking into account, the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, Lenovo said that its second fiscal quarter 2016 were 12 percent down and did not meet the expectations, reports Campaign Asia. “Sales of Moto-branded and Lenovo-branded mobile devices for the second fiscal quarter 2016 were US$2 billion, down 12 percent year-over-year, in yesterday’s results announcement.”

“The company is also changing leadership of its smartphone business in China. Xudong Chen is moving from his role as co-president and SVP of the brand’s Mobile Business Group (MBG) in China and will be succeeded by Gina Qiao, formerly SVP of human resources.”

Lenovo also hired three new executives expecting them to transition the company from hardware to “customer oriented company” that focuses on devices with AI and cloud services. The new executives join from Inte, Alcatel-Lucent and Microsoft – respectively Kirk Skaugen as executive vice president (EVP) and president of data center group (DCG); Laura Quatela as chief legal officer and SVP; and Yong Rui as chief technology officer and SVP.
