JDI begins mass-production of 5″ WQHD LCD Displays with over 500ppi Pixel Density

Japan Display Inc (aka JDI) has started mass production of a new 5-inch LTPS LCD display with WQHD resolution of 1440×2560 pixels that will serve with the pixel density of over 500ppi.

The new display panel will be made of low-temperature poly-silicon that will allow it to consume less power as well to improve image signal. The LCD will use JDI’s proprietary 2nd generation Pixel Eyes in-cell technology for thinner borders. The display provides deeper black levels as well as it will provide better performance when used with wet fingers.

The module also has an integrated circuit chip as driver to perform upscaling from 1080p content to 1440p. That means it will automatically convert images from FHD designed systems to display in WQHD resolution.

JDI also claims to have solved the display flicker problem at low refresh rate (as 30Hz) in its new LCD module that should perform without flickering issue at refresh rate from 60Hz to 30Hz on smartphones.

While JDI has been a provider of displays to various manufacturers for their devices, it’s worth mentioning here that JDI was formed by a consortium Japanese technology companies which include Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba. The companies merged their display businesses back in 2011 and the merged entity started its operations in April 2012.
