Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro – Everything you need to know

Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20

Huawei launched the most awaited Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro smartphones in London. Where both the smartphones share the power of first-ever 7nm processor in Android, the Pro model is the top-end smartphone setting the benchmark in camera department.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Huawei Mate 20 Pro features a stunning 6.39-inch OLED display with Quad-HD+ resolution of 3120×1440 pixels. The Pro model comes only in single memory configuration option that is 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The triple-camera system is pretty much same as on the P20 Pro and features Leica lenses. The main 40MP unit comes with a large 1/1.7″ sensor, f/1.8 aperture and 27mm equivalent focal length. The 8MP camera has a telephoto lens that features a f/2.4 aperture with 3x optical zoom (80mm equivalent focal length). The new ultra-wide-angle 20MP camera replaces the monochrome sensor of P20 Pro. It offers a 16mm equivalent focal length with f/2.2 aperture lens.

Mate 20 Pro Triple-Camera Explained

Mate 20 Pro can take macro shots from only a distance of 2.5cm (~1-inch.) With the trio of the cameras, the Mate 20 Pro offers a zoom range of equivalent to the 16-270mm with optical and hybrid zooms combined. The Pro model also features AI Portrait Color video mode

On the front there is a 24-megapixels selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture lens. It features powered 3D Live Emojis and 3D Live Object Modeling.

Mate 20 Pro boasts with a large 4200 mAh battery and supports the whopping 40W SuperCharge. It charges the phone up to 70% in 30 minutes. Huawei has brought the safety certificate from TUV Rheinland.

In addition the Mate 20 Pro supports 15W Wireless Quick Charge that comes with first-ever Wireless Reverse Charging that allows you use the phone as a power bank for other compatible devices with wireless charging support.

Mate 20 Pro Wireless Charging

The Mate 20 Pro features stereo speakers which you can’t see anywhere on the phone. There is no grill for that. The company used USB Type-C port to host the speaker inside. With that said, the Mate 20 Pro is rated IP68 for water/dust resistance. It can survive for 30 minutes down to 2 meters under water.

With introducing the in-screen fingerprint sensor in Mate 20 Pro smartphone, Huawei becomes the second brand to offer under-display fingerprint tech after Vivo.

The Mate 20 Pro also features 3D Face Unlock which is as fast as 0.6 seconds at a false acceptance rate of below 1/1,000,000. The phone uses the 3D Depth Sensing Camera System hidden inside the wider notch on top of the display.

World’s first smartphone to support the 4.5G LTE Cat. 21, Mate 20 Pro downloads at up to 1.4Gbps speed. The phone also supports world’s fastest Wi-Fi connection speeds. It also supports dual-band GPS (L1+L5) positioning tech.

Huawei Mate 20

Huawei Mate 20 features a little larger screen 6.53-inch IPS display with Full-HD+ resolution of 2244×1080 pixels. It’s 18.7:9 aspect ratio providing a pixel density of around 381 ppi. The Mate 20 comes in two memory configurations to choose – 4GB RAM or 6GB RAM with only 128GB storage.

Mate 20 also features the triple-camera but do not consider it as a top-tier performer as P20 Pro’s or Mate 20 Pro’s. This system has the 12MP main camera with 1/2.3″ sensor and 27mm wide-angle, f/1.8 aperture lens. The ultra-wide angle 17mm lens with f/2.2 aperture comes on top of the secondary 16MP camera. The third one is the same 8MP camera with 52mm telephoto lens (2x optical zoom).

Mate 20 Leica Triple Camera

Huawei Mate 20 also can macro shots from a distance of 2.5cm (~1-inch.) and it also features all those AI features.

On the front there is a 24-megapixels selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture lens housed inside a smaller notch, the company calls it a Dewdrop.

As it’s not as premium as the Pro model, the Mate 20 brings the old-school styled fingerprint sensor placed on the rear side below the camera module.

Mate 20 Fingerprint Dewdrop Display

Huawei Mate 20 features a 4000 mAh battery capacity that comes with the support of 22.5W SuperCharge which is sure not as attractive after seeing the 40W one in Pro model. But that’s not it, you don’t even get Wireless Charging support with the Mate 20 – forget about the reverse wireless charging.

Mate 20 also features the 3.5mm audio jack along with the USB Type-C connectivity. As the phone is rated only IP53 for dust/splash resistance, there is the speaker grill provided for loud speakers.

Android 9 Pie

Both the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro smartphones will run Android 9.0 Pie operating system right out-of-the-box. Huawei’s latest EMUI 9.0 will feature company’s own offerings on top.

Kirin 980 – System-on-Chip

Huawei announced the new chip Kirin 980 at IFA 2018, the day when company had already revealed that the Mate 20 series smartphone will feature the new processor. It’s the first ever 7nm processor used in an Android smartphone after the Apple A12 chip in recent iPhone XS devices.

Kirin 980

The Kirin 980 is also the first system-on-chip to use ARM’s latest Cortex-A76 cores. The chip has an octa-core processor with the ARM’s new DynamIQ CPU cluster configuration – 4 Cortex-A76 and four Cortex-A55 cores. They are divided into 2 high-performance and 2 power-efficient cores of A76 while the other four A55 cores are low-power.

The chipset is built with 60% more transistors than its predecessors – it’s 6.9 billion transistors. A76 cores are larger and promise 75% boost in performance and 58% improved power efficiency over the A73 cores in last year’s Kirin 970.

Kirin 980 CPU GPU

For graphics, Huawei has integrated the Mali-G76 GPU which is also the newest from the vendor. Along with, the chip has the Dual NPU AI, compared to the single in previous generation, promising enhanced power in mobile AI.

Nano Memory Card

In a strange move, Huawei abandoned the traditional and mostly widely adapted microSD card as memory expansion. The new Mate 20 series of smartphones now feature Huawei’s Nano Memory cards (aka NM card). That’s not the standardized SD card but the company along with the partner Toshiba is believing to have SD Alliance for making it the standard. However, the new NM card will be available up to 256GB storage capacity for now.
