Huawei Nova 4 officially boasts 48MP rear, 25MP front in-display camera

Finally, Huawei becomes the first smartphone maker to ship an in-display (aka punch-hole) camera. The Chinese smartphone maker has announced the much anticipated Huawei Nova 4 smartphone in the home town.

The most significant feature of Huawei Nova 4 is the front-facing camera which is embedded into the display. Hole-punched at the upper-left corner of the screen, the selfie camera features a 25-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture lens.

In addition, the Nova 4 features a triple-camera setup on the back just like the way we have seen in Huawei P20 Pro. However the Nova 4 comes in two variants, dubbed as High model and Standard model, with two different rear camera setups.

Other Key Features

The High model of Nova 4 features the first ever 48MP main camera in a smartphone. It’s paired with an ultra wide-angle 16MP camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The tree sensors come with f/1.8, f/2.2, and f/2.4 aperture lenses in order.

The Standard model, on the other hand, features the 20MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture lens. Other pair of the cameras remain same as High model. Both the variants’ cameras support autofocus, phase detect AF and contrast AF.

Rear triple-camera, on both variants of Nova 4, support 4K video recording and Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) anti-shake. Front camera supports 1080p video recording and EIS.

The in-display camera is exactly what we have seen in leaks and teasers. It’s also similar in size with Samsung’s Galaxy A8S. The 6.4-inch screen has an IPS display panel limited to 1080p resolution with pixel density of 398ppi.

Huawei Nova 4 is a flagship phone powered with company’s proprietary Kirin 970, equipped in Huawei P20 family. The phone comes 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage along with 3750 mAh battery. It supports 18-watts fast charging over USB Type-C. The phone runs Android 9.0 Pie out-of-the-box with EMUI 9.0.1 on top of it.

Huawei Nova 4 Pricing and Availability

The High model of Nova 4 with 48MP camera will cost 3,399 Yuan in China (~$490), while the cheaper/standard model with 20MP camera will cost $3,099 Yuan ($450).

The Nova 4 will be launched in China first, and later to follow in Europe and India. Availability in other regions unknown, however you shouldn’t expect it to launch in the US.

Just hold tight as Honor – the sub-brand of Huawei, is also set to launch Honor View 20 with similar variety of features including the in-display camera. But we are expecting it to feature the latest Kirin 980 processor like the Mate 20 series.
