Huawei has launched its Y-series for the year 2019 in Pakistan recently with the first phone – Huawei Y7 Prime 2019. The phone first remained in the pre-orders phase for a couple of weeks before getting on store-shelves recently.
Last year’s Y7 Prime 2018 did good in market and the company is expecting the same for its 2019 model. The new Y7 Prime costs you Rs. 29,000 and is actually a worthy upgrade over the last year’s one. In fact it seems a competitive contender among its price-league with respect to the features and specs. We’ll see that in a full review of the phone but we’ll unbox it today and take the first look.
This is widely believed that Huawei will not use the notch design in 2019. Instead the company will be using punch-hole display for front camera. However, with the Y7 Prime 2019 in hands, we think that they will keep the notch for its budget phones. Which is just like last year when the company started using the fullview display on its budget phones later.

Well, just get into it and see what you will get in the retail box.
The box keeps company’s most used design with pop-out style in a pure white color. You get pretty much standard items in the box which, in addition of the phone itself, includes the charger, the USB cable and the earphones. The box also includes a transparent back case and a screen protective film.
Back case is something that you would usually use if you want your phone to refrain from unwanted scratches. Some people prefer to keep it open but when it’s plastic build, you better use a case because it will indeed capture the lines you don’t want.
Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 as some upgrades over its predecessor. Visual aspect is the one which has changed to what you usually have seen among company’s flagship designs. The labeling is at the side of the phone below the vertically stacked dual-camera module. On the front you get a tiny dewdrop notch.
The dual-camera configuration on the back remains the same as last year’s Y7 Prime – the 13MP main camera with a 2MP depth sensor. However the lens is larger than before which is a good upgrade. If we are talking about the camera then let’s just talk about the front one as well. The selfie-camera is doubled in resolution with 16MP sensor – the Y7 Prime 2018 had an 8MP front-camera.
In a full review later, we’ll see how the phone performs in capturing photos as well as what features does the camera offer. We’ll also check how the 2MP depth sensor performs in taking portrait photos in aperture mode.
In my first use, I found only a few of the features in the native camera app. There was no “portrait mode” specially for portrait shots however the “aperture mode” is there which can do the same job of taking shots with blurred background.
The fingerprint sensor is also on the back and performance is equally good as other Huawei phones. We’ll see if it keeps its performance for a long-run with other apps loaded. As for our guess, the fingerprint and other performance should be on positive side of the graph if compared to the predecessor.
Y7 Prime 2019 maintains the 720p resolution however it’s with 19:9 aspect ratio and has more pixels vertically. So technically it’s an HD++ display resolution of 1520×720 pixels. The device size is pretty much similar, however you get a taller display size due to no bezel on top.
This 6.26-inch screen serves at the pixel density of ~269ppi which is also same as predecessor’s. So keep in mind, that the sharpness will remain similar to what you had on Y7 Prime 2018.
Unlike other devices with notch and a slimmer chin, this phone keeps the bottom bezel as before with the “HAUWEI” branding intact as predecessor.
The plastic build of the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 is just as good as previously we have seen from the company. But shiny and glossy finish on plastic will always give its unbalanced shape under reflections. Not too bad when you get a really good looking shades of gradient colors. This blue-to-purple or purple-to-blue color variant is Aurora Blue, among the two others that you can buy – Midnight Black and Coral Red.
As I mentioned above that the performance should be better than before, it’s because the phone comes with a significant processor upgrade, which is Snapdragon 450 with Adreno 506 GPU. We have test multiple devices with that configuration at almost similar performances. According to those tests, Y7 Prime 2019 should be around 20% faster with single-core performance while around 50% faster with multi-core performance.
Y7 Prime 2019 follows its predecessors to keep the 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage with no change. The newer model indeed comes with a larger battery capacity of 4000mAh. Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 comes with Android 8.1 Oreo software out-of-the-box with EMUI 8.2.
