The mobile camera war is continuing and we are witnessing one after another image sensor with higher and higher pixel count. Following the leaks and rumors, Sony’s IMX686 has now started appearing in teaser videos from the company itself.
Sony teased its IMX686 mobile image sensor in a video with sample shots. It’s yet unclear what resolution this new sensor would be offering. However, being a successor to the company’s 48MP IMX586, the new IMX686 is believed to be a 60MP image sensor. It can also be believed by the smartphones which are rumored to carry it.
According to several rumors, the Sony’s IMX686 may be featured in Huawei Nova 6, OPPO Reno 3v, and Vivo X30 Pro.
The 48MP sensor is the point where Samsung and Sony, both were running side by side. While Samsung took the lead this year with first announcing the 64MP mobile image sensor in May 2019 and most recently the 108MP image sensor in August, Sony is just about to launch its new image sensor.
While everything is still in rumors, Sony’s IMX686 could either be 60 or 64MP sensor. It’s worth considering that Samsung’s 64MP sensor has already been offered by the company’s like Vivo, Xiaomi and Realme. The 108MP sensor, that Samsung built with Xiaomi’s collaboration, is currently only shipped with Xiaomi’s recent Mi Note 10 and Mi Note 10 Pro.
Here are some sample shots grabbed from the above video. Note that they are not high-resolution shots, as these are only to show the visual appeal in the photographs.
