OPPO partners with Hasselblad to build better smartphone cameras

OPPO Hasselblad Partnership

In a recent announcement, OPPO has disclosed its partnership with Hasselblad — a popular medium format camera manufacturer based in Sweden. The Chinese smartphone maker will now work with the camera company to develop cameras for OPPO smartphones.

The two brands will collaborate to develop advanced imaging solutions through combined research and development. OPPO aims to provide users with a more refined imaging experience by leveraging natural color and calibration with Hasselblad. The smartphone maker thinks it would allow bringing the most natural skin tone in its portrait photography.

It’s a three-year partnership that will focus on developing “industry-leading camera technologies” for OPPO’s flagship Find X series. Both the companies will work on improvements for natural color tuning and enhancing color calibration solutions aiming to set a new benchmark for mobile camera color performance. The co-development is also claimed to deliver a consistent natural color performance for OPPO smartphones in all scenarios of shooting.

OPPO has already launched MariSilicon Xits proprietary imaging NPU, that, it notes, will further create a world-class photography experience with the Hasselblad partnership. A few important bits about OPPO’s MariSilicon X are that it can capture images with a 20-bit 120db dynamic range and produce RAW images along with 4K AI night video with live view.

The smartphone maker also makes note of the fact the partnership with Hasselblad is a result of elevating its existing partnership with OnePlus to the corporate level. It’s worth mentioning that Hasselblad partnered with OnePlus last year and that’s what OPPO is talking about.

Pete Lau, Chief Product Officer stated in a press release that the color performance in OPPO’s camera has always been a focal point.

“Following the success of OnePlus and Hasselblad’s collaboration in the past year, we are very pleased to see the partnership enter a new stage of development, giving more users around the world a chance to enjoy the legendary Hasselblad mobile imaging experience. Camera color performance has always been a focus for OPPO and a part of Hasselblad’s DNA. We are very excited to be able to explore the future of Hasselblad Camera for Mobile together.”

The initial devices manufactured under the partnership will be the Find X series set to introduce in the first quarter of 2022.
