Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro starts at $2,899

Apple has put a tandem OLED touchscreen and Dynamic Island on the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max, shipping from 6 November.

Key points

  • MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR is Apple's first touchscreen Mac.
  • Prices start at $2,899 in the US for the 14-inch M5 Pro.
  • Pre-orders opened 28 October; shipping starts 6 November.

Apple has announced a MacBook Pro you can touch. The 14- and 16-inch models, called MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, run on M5 Pro or M5 Max chips and start at $2,899 in the US. Pre-orders opened on 28 October, and the first units ship on 6 November.

This is the first Mac with a touch screen, and it also brings the iPhone’s Dynamic Island to the Mac. It arrives a day after we reported on the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip, and it is a separate, pricier line built on M5 Pro and M5 Max.

A touch sensor inside the panel

The touch layer is part of the panel itself, according to Apple, so there is no separate digitiser stacked above the screen. The hinge has been redesigned so the lid stays steady when you tap it, and video calls get stabilisation so the camera feed doesn’t shake while you do.

The panel is a tandem OLED, with two self-lit pixel layers. Peak brightness is rated at 2,000 nits in both HDR and SDR, contrast at 10,000,000:1, and the refresh rate adapts between 10Hz and 120Hz. Glare is handled by a coating on the standard glass, and buyers can pay extra for nano-texture glass.

Dynamic Island is where Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI now appear. Apple notes that Spotlight only moves there when Siri AI is available and switched on.

The 14-inch weighs about 3 lb, half a pound less than before, and the 16-inch about 4 lb. Apple says fast charging reaches 50% in roughly 30 minutes, and the audio side gets a six-speaker system tuned to sound right even with the lid closed, plus a 12MP Center Stage camera.

Prices went up

US prices are $2,899 for the 14-inch and $3,399 for the 16-inch with M5 Pro, and $4,499 and $4,799 for the M5 Max versions. Education buyers pay $150 to $300 less. MacRumors worked out that these are about 9% to 16% above what the previous models cost just before the announcement, and that a fully loaded 16-inch with 128GB of memory and 16TB of storage reaches $14,549.

Apple’s newsroom post lists no local prices, only that pre-orders are open in 30 countries and regions. We’ll update this post when Pakistan pricing is announced.

On the software side, its release says the M5 Max can run language models with hundreds of billions of parameters on the device. The laptops ship with macOS 27, where Siri AI is still in beta as of version 27.2.
