Kindle software 5.20.2 brings Ask This Book to e-readers

Ask This Book, an AI reading assistant that debuted in the Kindle iOS app last December, is now reaching e-readers via a large firmware update.

Key points

  • Kindle software 5.20.2 adds the AI tool Ask This Book to e-readers.
  • Amazon has not published release notes, so supported models are unclear.
  • It needs internet and works only with selected Amazon-published or distributed books.

Kindle e-readers are getting an AI assistant. Ask This Book, which has lived in the Kindle app for iOS since last December, is now showing up on devices in firmware 5.20.2, a download of about 643 MB, large by Kindle standards.

Amazon has not put out release notes, and its update page lists no download yet. So nobody outside Amazon can say with certainty which Kindles qualify. The 2026 models are expected to get it; 2024 owners are guessing.

Spoiler-safe questions

As Notebookcheck describes it, you open the tool from search or by highlighting text. Ask who a character is, what a scene meant or for a recap, then keep asking follow-ups. A setting confines answers to the pages you have already read, so a late twist stays hidden; widen it and the whole book is fair game.

Do not expect it on every book. It needs a connection, ignores sideloaded files and Send-to-Kindle documents, and covers only certain titles that Amazon publishes or distributes.

Amazon had signalled for more than a year that an on-device version would eventually arrive. For anyone who reads heavily on a Kindle and keeps a phone away from the book, it saves switching to another app to look up a name. The rollout is automatic, so a Kindle on Wi-Fi may simply update by itself, and Amazon has yet to say whether older models will be left out.
