Reddit plans a logged-in-only site as search traffic falls

Reddit will start testing a login-only version in select markets outside the US this quarter, after search referrals fell by over a million a week in October.

Key points

  • Reddit will test a logged-in-only site in select non-US markets in Q4 2026.
  • Search referrals fell by more than 1 million a week on average in October.
  • Reddit says login-only means better ad targeting and protection of its data.

Reddit is preparing to close its doors to logged-out visitors. The company told investors on 29 October that it will begin testing a login-only Reddit in select markets outside the US in the final quarter of 2026, with the results shaping a global version.

The reason is search. Many people read Reddit threads without an account, usually after clicking a result on Google, and that stream of visitors is shrinking. Reddit would rather have those readers signed in, where it can show them ads aimed at their interests and keep its archive away from scrapers.

Search referrals down by a million a week

In its third-quarter shareholder letter, Reddit said search referral traffic fell “meaningfully” in the quarter and the drop sped up toward the end. During October, referrals from search fell by more than 1 million a week on average.

Logged-out users took the biggest hit. Reddit counted 76.8 million logged-out daily users worldwide in the quarter, up 17% on a year earlier, but the US figure slid 4% to 27.3 million while the rest of the world grew 33% to 49.5 million. Total daily users were 130.3 million, with 53.5 million of them logged in.

Reddit also gave investors a warning: at this pace, its total audience could shrink by roughly a tenth or more before the year ends.

What Reddit says it gains

The letter calls the move “a key piece of work to retain new audiences” and says it is better for the business because Reddit will have more signals for ad targeting. It also lets the company protect access to what it calls its “extremely valuable corpus of data”. Reddit adds that “pretty much all of the major ad-based platforms have gone through this transition”.

The letter also notes that only about 13% of eligible mobile web visitors currently see Reddit’s prompt to switch to the app, which it says leaves room to grow.

Reddit has not named the test markets or said when a worldwide switch would happen, so it is not yet clear when readers in any particular country would hit a login wall. For now, the site can still be read without an account.

The letter says the Q4 tests will inform “an optimized version of logged-in-only Reddit globally”.
