Sony Pictures has bought the film rights to Mouthwashing, the 2024 psychological horror game made by Swedish studio Wrong Organ. Karyn Kusama, the director of The Invitation and Jennifer’s Body, is attached to direct.
Scott Derrickson, who made The Black Phone and Sinister, will produce with C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng through their Crooked Highway company, which has a deal to make feature films for Sony’s Screen Gems label. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who worked with Kusama on The Invitation, are writing the script. No cast has been named.
The deal was first reported in an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter on 29 October. It presents the project as Sony’s next video game adaptation after Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil.
Five crew, one asteroid
The game puts you in a freighter called Tulpar that has come down hard on an asteroid, with five crew left to cope. Food and supplies thin out, suspicion grows, and the story, told in first person and out of order, keeps returning to responsibility, denial and what happens when someone in charge dodges blame.
The report says the game scored 88 on Metacritic after its PC launch, has sold close to a million copies on PC, and that clips about it have drawn 63 million views on YouTube and nearly a billion on TikTok, according to the studio.
Out on consoles the same day
Critical Reflex said in a post on X that Mouthwashing is now out on PlayStation (PS5 and PS4), Xbox (Series X|S and One) and Nintendo Switch, and is in Game Pass, with a new trailer. On PC it is sold on Steam.
Neither report gives a start of production or a release date for the film.
