TCL pitches SQD-Mini LED TVs as the answer to OLED limits

TCL says its SQD-Mini LED TVs avoid OLED burn-in and brightness limits, and argues Pakistan's shift to 75-inch and larger screens suits the technology.

Key points

  • TCL says SQD-Mini LED avoids OLED burn-in and offers twice its lifespan.
  • TCL Pakistan lists the C8L in 65, 75, 85 and 98-inch sizes.
  • The 6,000-nit peak applies to the 85 and 98-inch models only.

TCL is making a case for SQD-Mini LED as the successor to OLED in premium televisions, and it is aiming the argument at Pakistani living rooms. In a statement issued from Lahore on 28 October, the company said OLED has hit physical limits that matter most on very large screens.

The pitch rests on three complaints about OLED: brightness, burn-in and lifespan. TCL puts OLED’s peak brightness at around 2,000 nits and its lifespan at roughly 30,000 hours, and says static elements such as game HUDs and news tickers can leave permanent marks. Its own TV technology, it says, keeps brightness at full strength, carries no burn-in risk and lasts about double. These are TCL’s own comparisons, not independent test results.

Why TCL says big screens favour Mini LED

According to the statement, organic panels get disproportionately expensive to make at 85 and 98 inches, while inorganic LED backlights scale more cheaply. On the demand side, TCL describes sets of 75 inches and up as Pakistan’s quickest-growing TV category, though it gave no sales figures to back that up.

The company credits its panel arm, TCL CSOT, for getting here. It says the unit has built Mini LED panel lines since 2019 and ranks first worldwide in panels of 85 inches and above. It also cites the 2024 X11K, which it says reached 6,500 nits of HDR brightness, as the test bed for the backlight design now sold as Precise Dimming.

What the C8L offers in Pakistan

The statement does not name a model, but the photo that came with it shows the C8L. TCL Pakistan’s C8L page lists 65, 75, 85 and 98-inch versions, a native 144Hz panel and up to 4,032 Precise Dimming Zones. It also lists Bang & Olufsen audio and says the 6,000-nit HDR peak applies to the 85 and 98-inch models only.

No price appears on TCL’s page or in the statement. The company’s Turkey launch announcement from June gives the same 6,000-nit and 4,032-zone ceilings for the C8L. We will add Pakistani pricing once TCL or its retailers confirm it.

We reported on EcoStar’s 100-inch model earlier this week which is another large QD Mini LED option. Anyone comparing the two should read brightness and zone counts as peak, best-case figures, and ask for a demonstration in a bright room before paying for the largest sizes. On paper, TCL’s proprietary display tech is on par with any local TV brand.
