Threads tests ‘Friends’ for sharing posts with a smaller group

Threads is testing Threads Friends in Ireland, Italy and Japan, a close-friends list of up to 50 people who can see posts shared only with them.

Key points

  • Threads Friends is being tested in Ireland, Italy and Japan.
  • The list holds up to 50 people, per Engadget's report.
  • Meta has not said if or when the test will expand.

Threads is trying out a way to post to a chosen handful of people rather than all of your followers. Meta calls it Threads Friends, and it has gone live as a test in Ireland, Italy and Japan.

It works like a close-friends list: you choose who is on it, and only those people see what you share to it. In the test countries, someone sees a friends-only post only if its author has added them.

Threads announced the test in a post on its own account: “People in Ireland, Italy and Japan can now try out Threads Friends, a new way to share posts with a smaller group.”

Up to 50 “Thriends”

An Engadget report says the list is capped at 50 people, whom the app calls “Thriends”, and that a Meta spokesperson told the site Threads suggests followers you interact with often, which you can then edit. Laura Javier, Threads’ product design director, showed a preview in which the feature’s name flips to “Thriends” as an Easter egg.

After you set up the list, a green bubble at the top of your feed opens whatever your friends shared in the past 24 hours. The report adds that Meta has not released detailed images of the feature.

The idea echoes Twitter’s Circles, which launched in 2022 with groups of up to 150 and was dropped about a year later.

Where it is available

The test covers only Ireland, Italy and Japan, so Threads Friends is not available in Pakistan. Meta has not said whether or when it will expand.
