Windows 11 test build adds phone actions and filters to Search

A new Windows 11 Experimental build lets Search adjust volume and brightness, call from a linked Android phone and filter results.

Key points

  • Experimental build 26340.9843 adds inline sliders and phone actions to Windows Search.
  • Android calls and texts work now; iPhone support is planned for early next year.
  • Result filters and richer previews are included; no release date is given.

Microsoft is testing a bigger Windows 11 Search that does more than find files. In a new Experimental build, you can change volume or screen brightness from sliders inside the results, and use a connected Android phone to make calls or send texts without leaving the search box.

The changes are in Build 26340.9843, along with the 26H1 Experimental build 28120.3393. They are not in the Beta channel, so most Insiders will not see them yet.

Sliders, phone controls and previews

Microsoft’s Windows Insider post says inline actions now cover volume, brightness and cursor size, and suggested actions are meant to show what else Search can do. With a phone linked through Phone Link, you can call or text a contact and flip actions such as Do Not Disturb. Android works now. iPhone support is promised for early next year.

Results show more detail too. Files preview in place with the last modified date, location and author, and Search can answer questions about weather, stocks and facts. It can also suggest apps and games from the Microsoft Store, which can be switched off under Settings, Privacy & security, Search.

A row of filters lets you narrow results to Files & Folders, Settings, Actions and other groups. You can also give a result a thumbs up or down with a right click, and remove items from the first view before you start typing.

This is the new Search that began rolling out earlier this month. For now it opens at the bottom centre of the screen, and Microsoft says it is still working on making it follow the taskbar position and work from the Start menu. As with all Insider features, there is no date for a public release.
