ChatGPT desktop app will fold its Work tab into Chat

OpenAI told users it is merging the Chat and Work tabs, while Codex stays separate but will share the same usage allowance.

Key points

  • OpenAI is merging the Chat and Work tabs in the ChatGPT desktop app.
  • Codex stays separate but shares one usage allowance with ChatGPT.
  • A select group of users gets the merged tab first for feedback.

If you use the ChatGPT desktop app, one of its tabs is about to disappear. OpenAI has told users it will merge the Chat and Work tabs into a single place, with Codex staying as its own section.

The merged view is meant to let you start with an idea and then have ChatGPT carry it through. You bring in files and plugins, and ask it to build a website, make a presentation or do tasks on the web while you watch and steer.

The plan comes from an email OpenAI sent to users, which TechCrunch quoted. The email says the new experience will first go to a selected group of users for feedback and will reach everyone later. It gives no date for the wider rollout.

One allowance for ChatGPT and Codex

The change comes with a catch for heavy users. OpenAI says ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same pool of usage after the merge. The email says most people will not notice, but depending on which models you use and how much, some will have to wait for their allowance to reset more often than before.

The desktop app has had three areas for a while: Chat, Work and Codex. Chat and Work sit together under ChatGPT, which has made it easy to lose track of where a project lives. Merging the first two removes that split, and Codex, the coding tool, remains a separate experience in the app.

The same outlet notes that Anthropic combined Claude’s chat and Cowork functions on one screen in September, so OpenAI is following a layout its rival already uses.

The details above come from the email as TechCrunch quoted it. Which accounts get the merged tab first has not been named.
