If you pay for ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business, your usage may soon be counted in tokens rather than in separate allowances. A report says OpenAI’s support page describes one shared budget for ChatGPT and Codex starting in December.
Heavier models and longer tasks would use the budget faster. Chats with Instant models would not count against it, so casual use should feel the same.
The details come from a report by The Decoder, which cites an updated OpenAI usage-limits page. We could not open that page ourselves, so the December timing and the plan list rest on that report. It adds that a Settings screen would show how much is left and when it refills, and that people who run dry could wait, move to a bigger plan or buy credits.
The Chat and Work merge is not final
The change goes with OpenAI’s plan to fold ChatGPT’s Work mode into the main chat interface. OpenAI engineer Tibo Sottiaux wrote on 28 October that the team is working on it but that it was “not rolling out just yet”, adding that OpenAI would “proceed carefully”. He gave no date.
The Decoder’s view is that heavy users on cheaper plans may get weaker results once complex models eat into a fixed budget. That is its reading, not something OpenAI has said.
