Claude can now read your bank accounts, in a US-only beta

Anthropic's Personal Finance feature links bank and card accounts through Plaid, read-only, and is rolling out to paid Claude plans in the US.

Key points

  • Claude's Personal Finance links bank and card accounts through Plaid, read-only.
  • The beta is rolling out to Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the US.
  • Claude sees balances and up to two years of transactions.

Anthropic has added a Personal Finance feature to Claude that lets the chatbot look through your bank and card accounts and explain where the money goes. It is a US beta for paying Claude users on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans, and it has no power to send, move or invest money.

Before anything is shared, you sign in to your bank through Plaid, a service that connects apps to banks, which means Claude does not get your login details. Once an account is linked, Claude can be asked, for example, where your money went at the end of the month.

Anthropic says the answer is a spending summary grouped into categories such as rent, food and shopping, and that Claude also looks for duplicate charges, surprise fees and bills that creep up month after month. You can ask follow-ups like “is that more than usual?”, check whether you spend more than you earn, or have a term such as APR explained, with a calculation of what you paid in interest over the past year.

What Claude gets to see is limited, TechCrunch reports: the bank and account names, the account type, the last four digits of the number, balances, credit limits and two years of history. Anthropic also says conversations in the Personal Finance hub are kept out of model training.

The company’s blog post promises that Personal Finance carries no ads or sponsored recommendations, and Anthropic is not turning Claude into a lender. It says the tool is not meant to give investment advice.

OpenAI put a similar Plaid-based feature into ChatGPT in May, so Claude is now catching up. Like Claude Duet, the assistant that messages you first, it is US-only for now, and Anthropic has given no date for other countries.
