Googlebook November update fixes reboot loops and Bluetooth lag

Google's first big Googlebook update, with 31 fixes, covers a reboot loop after interrupted updates, external-monitor black screens and Bluetooth audio lag.

Key points

  • Googlebook November update carries 31 fixes and improvements
  • A boot-slot fix stops a reboot loop after an interrupted update
  • Fixes cover external monitors, Bluetooth audio, Zoom and the Linux Terminal beta

Google has started rolling out the first big update for Googlebook laptops, about a month after they launched. The November release carries 31 fixes and improvements, the most important being a cure for a reboot loop that could follow an interrupted update.

It also repairs black screens on external monitors, laggy Bluetooth audio and a crash when unplugging USB-C hubs. All Googlebooks get the latest security patches, while the HP Googlebook 14 and Dell XPS Googlebook 13 receive the longest list of device-specific changes. Acer, ASUS and Lenovo models get a few of their own.

The update notes sit in a thread on Google’s Googlebook community page, and 9to5Google went through them by category. Many fixes address everyday annoyances. Keystrokes typed into the lock screen right after waking the laptop now register reliably, a copy pop-up in the Files app is gone, and the Wallpaper & Style app no longer hangs.

For displays and calls, Google lists better stability in Zoom, a fix for black screens when playing DRM-protected video such as Netflix on an external monitor, and a fix for a display driver crash when unplugging USB-C hubs or multi-monitor setups. On the audio side, Bluetooth low-energy mice reconnect after a restart, USB microphones and audio interfaces no longer suffer a buffering problem, lip-sync lag on Bluetooth audio is reduced, and hearing aids using Google’s ASHA standard can now be picked as the audio output.

Under the hood, the update improves browser memory stability and Wi-Fi stability in the background, and it trims the memory used by on-device AI on 16GB models. It also brings Linux kernel updates, versions 6.18 and 6.12, and a firmware installation fix. The Linux Terminal, still in beta, also gets better reliability for the Antigravity interface, plus steadier sessions that survive sleep and tab switching, more reliable port forwarding including SSH on port 2222, and logs hardened so that terminal keystrokes are no longer written to diagnostic logs.

The boot-slot fix matters most for anyone whose Googlebook got stuck in a loop after an update was interrupted. Google’s notes describe the cause as an issue with boot-slot priority.

Googlebook news earlier this week was Google’s confirmation that detachable Googlebooks are on the way, with Lenovo likely to ship first. Google has not given a rollout schedule for the November update, so devices will receive it as it reaches them.
