Nier: Automata update bloats PC install to 366GB, Square Enix working on a fix

A language-support patch made Nier: Automata on Steam ask for 366GB instead of about 50GB; Square Enix has a workaround while it prepares a fix.

Key points

  • A language patch inflated Nier: Automata's PC install to 366GB.
  • The game was previously about 50GB.
  • Square Enix suggests unticking DLC in Steam as a workaround.

A patch meant to add three languages has made Nier: Automata on Steam balloon from roughly 50GB to 366GB. Square Enix says it is investigating and has posted a way to avoid the huge download for now.

The update, released on 5 November, added Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Instead of a few new language files, the PC edition now asks for several hundred gigabytes, and the store page still lists a 50GB requirement.

Square Enix confirmed the problem in a Japanese post, saying the installer now shows more storage needed than it should. The company apologised and said it is looking for the cause and a solution. As a temporary step, it suggests downloading just the base game: open the game’s properties in Steam, go to DLC and untick the DLC packs.

IGN reported the cause as a bug that applied the entire game to every DLC pack in the PC edition, which is why the required space multiplied. Players complained of being unable to install the game or of having no room left for other games, and negative reviews piled up on the Steam page, with several people saying they had uninstalled it until it is repaired.

One reviewer joked that the company must have used AI to add the languages; that is the player’s guess, and neither IGN nor Square Enix says how the bug happened beyond the DLC packaging error.

Square Enix has not given a date for the fix. Anyone who has not yet updated, or who is reinstalling, can use the DLC workaround so Steam only requests the base game’s roughly 50GB, and re-add the DLC packs once a corrected build is out.
