Spotify Premium may soon have a paid extra on top of the subscription. The Financial Times reports that the company is readying an AI tool that lets listeners turn existing songs into remixes and covers, for roughly $4 to $5 more a month.
Neither the price nor the date is settled. The newspaper’s sources say Spotify is aiming for the first three months of 2027, with a possible reveal in February at the time of the Grammys. Spotify declined to comment to the FT.
A subscriber could ask for a dance version of a folk track, or hear one singer’s hit performed in another’s style. Per The Next Web’s summary of the FT story, a song is available only if its artist has personally opted in, whatever the label has signed. Original artists would get a share of the money the fan-made versions earn, and plays of a remix would count towards the original song’s chart position. Spotify is also working on a way to place these versions in playlists.
The labels are not all on board
Spotify first described the add-on in May, in a deal with Universal Music Group that promised fans licensed covers and remixes as a paid extra. Music Business Worldwide, which covered that announcement, noted that no price or launch date was given at the time. The $4 to $5 figure is the new detail.
After the Universal deal, Spotify has reportedly added licences from Merlin, Kobalt and Believe. Sony Music and Warner Music are still in talks. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström said on a second-quarter earnings call that Spotify could launch without every major label, so the first catalogue on offer may be smaller than the full library.
An Android Authority report adds an analyst estimate from Bernstein: its analyst Ian Moore expects 7% to 8% of its US subscriber base to sign up by the end of 2028. The same report says Spotify and Universal have been meeting individual artists to persuade them to opt in, and that big current stars have been harder to win over than older acts.
Spotify has not confirmed any of the figures, so the price could change before a launch. The Grammy Awards ceremony on 7 February 2027 is the first date to watch for an announcement.
