Bethesda has finally put a name on the next Elder Scrolls: the game is called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The reveal closed a video marking 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios on Tuesday, 3 November, and it came with a short teaser. There is still no release date, no platform list and no gameplay.
In the video, studio creative director Todd Howard looks back over the studio’s history and says it is a good moment to look forward. A brief teaser follows, showing a scroll half-buried in sand, and then the title card. It is the first new footage for the game since the original teaser at E3 in 2018.
Bethesda’s own post on X says the team is happy to reveal “the name and location” and warns that it will be “some time” before it shares more. Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma also wrote on X that Sentinel is “the next chapter of The Elder Scrolls”. The sand, and a quote at the end of the teaser attributed to a moth priest serving the High Queen of Hammerfell, point to the province of Hammerfell as the setting. That fits the long-running fan theory, which had spread again in recent weeks.
The quote itself is dated 4E 206 in the series’ calendar, five years after the events of Skyrim, and talks of a scroll showing “a future lost” and “a victory undone”. Wccftech, which went through the trailer, reads that as a sign the plot will involve the Elder Scrolls artifacts themselves. That is an interpretation, not something Bethesda has said, and the date may only be a fragment of in-game lore.
On timing, reporter Jason Schreier has said the game is still more than two years from release, which would put it in 2028 or later. Bethesda has not confirmed any window. That estimate has been tied to talk of a next-generation Xbox arriving around the same time, but that link is speculation too.
The reveal lands in the middle of a rough year for Xbox’s studios, which have gone through layoffs and spin-offs under its current management. Bethesda says development continues. Skyrim’s 15th anniversary falls on 11 November, so fans may hear more from the studio around then, though nothing has been announced.
