Xiaomi may be preparing a wide-screen phone that does not fold. A tipster says an Android brand is testing a wide candybar phone, and the emoji in the post points to Xiaomi, although the tipster did not name the company.
This is a tip from Digital Chat Station, not an announcement of any kind. Xiaomi has said nothing about such a phone, and the only detail in the post is that it will have a fingerprint scanner on the side, which fits a body this wide.
Digital Chat Station is a frequent source of phone leaks from China, but a hint by emoji leaves room for error.
The idea comes from Huawei’s Pura X View, a phone with an unusually wide screen. Several other brands are also reportedly entering the the league of wide screen phones.
While the tip has not hinted such, GSMArena guesses that Xiaomi would pick a 16:10 or 16:9 shape.
Oppo is said to be working on a wide Reno model with a 6.35-inch screen, a Dimensity 9600M chip, an 8,000mAh battery and two 200MP rear cameras. Doogee has previewed its Note60 W, and Coolpad has already shown the Cool X Wide, which pairs a 50MP camera with a 16:10 screen.
Huawei itself is said to be taking the form further. Apart from the Pura X View, another smartphone lineup Osta is rumoured to launch under a new sub-brand internally referred to Xingmang (“Starlight” or “Starburst” in English.) The same tipster had previously shared this phone may have wide-screen model of its own.
None of these phones has a launch date, a price or a confirmed name. Reports about Oppo’s and Huawei’s phones come from tipsters too, so specifications may change before anything is announced.
