Tipster: Galaxy Z Fold9 may bring back the hidden selfie camera

A tipster says Samsung's next foldable returns to an under-display camera inside; nothing is confirmed, and his thickness figures look too thin.

Key points

  • A tipster says Samsung will unveil a foldable with an under-display camera next year.
  • His 3.9mm unfolded target is thinner than the 4.1mm Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.
  • Samsung has not confirmed the Galaxy Z Fold9, a date or a price.

A tipster claims Samsung is about to put the selfie camera of its book-style foldable back under the inner screen. He ties the idea to the Galaxy Z Fold9, due next year, and says thickness and design would stay close to today’s. Samsung has not commented and nothing is confirmed.

It would undo a choice Samsung made last year. The inner screens of the Galaxy Z Fold3 through Fold6 had the camera under the display, the Fold7 switched to a visible punch hole, and both this year’s Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra kept the hole.

What the tipster wrote

The account, kro, said in a post on X on 29 October that “Samsung will unveil a device with UDC, major internal changes, and minimal changes to its overall thickness and design”. UDC means under-display camera. That post quotes an earlier one, where he described a Galaxy Z Fold9 already in development to take on Apple’s iPhone Duo, aiming for 3.9mm open and 7.9mm closed.

On the camera he is less certain than the headline suggests: he writes that Samsung is “considering” UDC and that he has heard it “may already be confirmed”. GSMArena, which spotted the post, adds the context: Apple’s first foldable already hides a 4MP selfie camera beneath its inner display.

A thickness target that does not fit

The numbers are where the claim wobbles. By GSMArena’s measure the wide Galaxy Z Fold8 is 4.5mm thick open and 9.7mm closed, so 7.9mm closed would take 1.8mm off a phone that is supposed to change little. Samsung’s own launch release puts the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra at 4.1mm unfolded and 215g, which means 3.9mm would be thinner than even that model.

Either the figures were early goals that changed, or they describe a different phone, such as a Fold9 Ultra.

What today’s Folds cost

There is no Fold9 price, and Samsung has said nothing about one. For comparison, the US launch prices of the two current models, before trade-in credits and deals, were $1,899 to $2,499 for the wide Fold8 and $2,099.99 to $2,699.99 for the Fold8 Ultra, according to launch-day reports.

Model Storage US launch price
Galaxy Z Fold8 256GB $1,899
Galaxy Z Fold8 512GB $2,099
Galaxy Z Fold8 1TB (16GB RAM) $2,499
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra 256GB $2,099.99
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra 512GB $2,299.99
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra 1TB $2,699.99

The tip rests on one source whose own thickness figures already clash with Samsung’s shipping phones, so it stays a rumour until Samsung shows hardware.
