Dune: Awakening gets a free snow map on 1 December

Funcom's free Blood and Ice expansion adds the frozen Polar Sink map and about 35 hours of progression on PC, PS5 and Xbox on 1 December.

Key points

  • Blood and Ice is free and launches 1 December on PC, PS5 and Xbox.
  • The Polar Sink map offers about 35 hours of progression.
  • Character copying and full cross-play are due in January 2027.

Players of Dune: Awakening get a free expansion on 1 December that swaps the desert for ice. Blood and Ice is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox at no charge.

Funcom says the new Polar Sink region carries roughly 35 hours of progression, along with new vehicle modules, augments and specialisation traits. Cold, not heat, is the thing to manage there.

Two biomes, one goal

The map splits into a tundra and an ice cap. Rich water-shipping families hold the tundra, and the real prize sits behind the guarded ice cap. Desert gear will not cope, so crafting upgrades depends on materials found only in the Polar Sink. In its announcement, Funcom says ice you collect can also cool your base machinery and speed up production.

A new Events tab arrives at the same time. The Water Crisis event follows the current Scourge event soon after launch, and Funcom wants to run these more often with free rewards.

What else is coming

Funcom has launched a cosmetics store with rotating outfits, vehicle variants and base decor, including film-inspired looks, and says sales pay for the free updates. Moving characters between multiplayer and single-player, and onto select private servers, is planned for January 2027, along with full cross-play. An Eurogamer report adds that offline single-player should land this month, and notes Funcom recently confirmed a restructuring that may bring layoffs.

Funcom puts the number of new players since the console launch above one million and promises several major free updates in 2027.
